The European Universities Basketball Championship 2027 aims to integrate environmental, social and good governance principles throughout the organisation of the event.
Environmental Sustainability
Zadar's compact city centre and the close proximity of the main accommodation and competition facilities provide opportunities for walking and sustainable mobility.
The championship will support sustainable practices through:
- Walking and cycling – many locations can be reached on foot, while bicycle rental is also available in Zadar.
- Lower-emission transport – transport planning will include low-emission mobility options and shuttle services.
- Waste management – recycling and separate waste collection will be supported at competition and accommodation facilities.
- Local suppliers – the event will encourage cooperation with local suppliers and service providers.
- More sustainable products – environmentally friendly and biodegradable products will be used where possible.
- Reducing single-use plastic – tap water is safe to drink in Croatia, supporting the reduction of single-use plastic bottles.
- Sustainable accommodation – the New Campus of the University of Zadar includes solar panels and a rainwater collection system.
- Sustainable catering – catering arrangements will take sustainability considerations into account, including the use of local products where possible.
Social Responsibility
The championship will bring together students, athletes, volunteers and university representatives from across Europe, creating opportunities for participation, learning and cultural exchange.
The event will support:
- Student and volunteer participation
- Education and knowledge sharing
- Participant wellbeing
- Cultural exchange and connection between participants
- Engagement with the local community
Through volunteering, educational activities and the social and cultural programme, the championship will create opportunities for participants to experience Zadar beyond the competition itself.
Good Governance
The organisation of the championship will be based on cooperation between EUSA, the Academic Sports Association of the University of Zadar, the University of Zadar, the City of Zadar and other partners.
The event will follow EUSA regulations and relevant safety and organisational standards, with responsibilities coordinated among the organisations and services involved in delivering the championship.
The aim is to organise a responsible sporting event that creates a positive experience for participants while considering its environmental, social and organisational impact.
